For some time, BJB has been operating its x-ray computed tomography laboratory for its own purposes. This innovative service and technology is offered also to other companies. The unique system can accommodate any parts from a wide variety of materials up to a height of 750 mm, a diameter of 265 mm and a weight of 50kg. Most importantly, we can measure with a reproducible accuracy of up to +-5 um and can recognize details down to one micrometer.

BJB's, due to our engineering expertise, has better control of the quality and safety of materials, along with the parts and components before the start of series production. We now provide our innovative CT solutions and cost-efficient services to other companies.

Our CT Laboratory: Layer by Layer 3D Views

X-Ray computed tomography is familiar to most from a medical perspective. But it is also increasingly gaining ground in the industrial sector as a non-destructive analysis technology for the internal and external geometries of any test samples made of plastic, metal, ceramics, or other materials.

The system in our CT laboratory provides internal views layer by layer via a 3D volume model and provides detailed information, even for complex assemblies. Each of these details can be closely examined. Weak points and errors can be clearly identified. For instance:

  • Weak points and errors can clearly be identified
  • Dimensional tolerances, in incorrect, can be identified immediately
  • Were any components deformed during product assembly?
  • Are there voids in injection-molded plastic components were there should not be?

A CT analysis answers these and many other questions. Precise internal views give designers important information and speed up the product development process considerably. From dimensional measurements to the initial sample test report, this method also shortens the approval process.

From a technical point of view, computed tomography involves the computation of a three-dimensional volume model of the test object from a large number of two-dimensional x-ray images by means of complex mathematical calculations. This volume model consists of small individual volume elements, so-called voxels, which contain relative density information on the test object, thereby providing information on all external and internal geometries

The primary menu below provides an overview of the various analysis methods available:

  • Radiography Test: A simple x-ray image can help to solve many issues. Do you have components or assemblies which you would like to examine by non-destructive means? It is possible, for example, to carry out assessments of assembly situation
  • Slice Analysis: Tomographic slices enable a test piece to be examined slice by slice. The system calculates slices of a certain thickness through the test piece at specific intervals.
  • Defect Analysis: Air pockets in plastic parts are usually unwelcome. The resultant weakening of the material causes the plastic to break or leads to a reduction in dielectric strength. Through the automatic identification of imperfections in a test piece, it is possible to make a very rapid assessment of the distribution and porosity of the test piece.  Defects are displayed in colour in the volume model.
  • Wall Thickness Analysis: In order to save on material, plastic parts are being designed with ever thinner walls. Wall thickness analysis can be performed to investigate the wall thicknesses of your components. On a model of your test piece, the wall thickness is analysed with an angle of aperture to be determined and is displayed in a false-colour representation of the test piece.
  • Target-Actual Comparison: The target-actual comparison results from the superimposition of the measured volume model or surface model and the CAD dataset from your design department. The model obtained from the test piece is superimposed on the CAD model by means of a specific alignment logic. In the second step, the deviation between the model obtained and the CAD specification is calculated and displayed via a false-colour model of the test piece. The colours represent a certain deviation on the basis of a freely selectable scale. 
  • Measurement: Measurement is done for CAD-referenced measurement, ISTR-Initial Sample Test Report, and Creation of surface models / Reverse Engineering.
  • Service Portfolio & Measurement: The system can accommodate any parts from a wide variety of materials up to a height of 750 mm, a diameter of 265 mm and a weight of 50 kg. We can measure with a reproducible accuracy of up to +-5 μm and can recognize details down to one micrometre.

What You May Not Know About BJB’s 150 Year Historic Impact on Lighting

BJB & Repro-Light Consortium Aim to Transform the European LED Industry

Since 2017, BJB has been participating in an exciting project that aims to 'revolutionize the European lighting industry by 2020'. The Repro-Light project, in conjunction with the European Commission's Horizon 2020 work programme, is creating the 'Luminaire of the Future', directly focused on re-usable and re-configurable parts for sustainable LED based lighting systems.

As noted in the projects original press release, 'this project will harness innovative technologies and materials to implement a never attempted before modular luminaire architecture, a smart production scheme and also the development of a reconfigurable customized LED luminaires, which will create the 'Luminaire of the Future.'

Bringing together leading experts within the industry, BJB is just one of the premiere members of the consortium working on this innovative project. The combined power of Trilux, Rohner Engineering, Mondragon, Luger Research, IREC, Grado Zero, Bartenbach, and BJB will provide not just influence but actionable results in moving the Repro-light project forward.

The initial phase of the project focused on analyzing the customers needs and technical requirements. Understanding the perception of how workers perceive lighting in the workspace was an important first factor in assessing next steps. A survey, conducted by Repro-Light in early 2019 revealed that 'current lighting in the workplace is not satisfying end-users and their needs'.

The results of the overall first survey proved that change is required in the working environments, both in industrial spaces and in offices, and that the overall community is ready for major changes in lighting transformation.

The latest focus of Repro-Light has been to assess the 'Life Cycle and Sustainable Development of Lighting' As part of the project, the IREC, an energy research institute in based in Spain, has been looking to focus their research into the design of luminaries to contribute to sustainable development.

Additionally, BJB is bringing our historic knowledge about mechanical, electrical and thermal interfaces including the flexible automated production for new LED lighting systems. Within this project, the concept for a socket-connector system is developed in respect of special requirements for interchangeable intelligent light modules, giving BJB the opportunity to use these synergies in Reprolight.

BJB has developed and implemented more than 160 automated production lines for worldwide customers in the lighting and domestic appliance industry. We are also an active member in the national and international stadardization committees like IEC and Zhaga. The experience of our innovations and iconic experience will stand out within the Repro-light project.

Zhaga: The Global Lighting-Industry Organization Standardizing Components of LED’s

You may wonder why BJB works so closely with Zhaga? When it comes to to the LED, Zhaga is the premiere organization aiming to standardize all components, including:

  • LED light engines
  • LED modules
  • LED arrays, along with holders, electronic control gear (LED drivers) and connectivity fit systems

As outlined at Zhaga.com, LED technology is evolving everyday, and it's imperative to have an industry-wide standard of oversight. Here's a few of the highlights of what this global-lighting organization is successfully accomplishing:

  • Use of Zhaga specifications can provide benefits such as the ability to keep pace with rapid LED technology evolution, flexibility to respond to customer/market requirements, and improved supply-chain management.
  • Zhaga is creating a set of Interface Specifications, known as Books, which define the conditions necessary for interchangeability. Each Book defines one or more components of an LED luminaire by means of the mechanical, photometric, electrical, thermal, and control interfaces of the component to its environment.
  • Products based on several of the Zhaga Books are already in common use in the global lighting market. Zhaga continues to develop new specifications that reflect the needs of luminaire makers and other stakeholders.
  • Zhaga members share their technical expertise in an open, cooperative manner. The consortium is market-oriented and works in the best interests of lighting-industry stakeholders.

An Evolving Organization

Zhaga is creating a series of specifications, known as Books. Each Book defines the interface of one or more components of an LED luminaire. BJB is a Proud Member

Standards are Our Duty As Framework for Real Innovations in Lighting Technology

Currently, standards and standards are all about LEDs and their use in luminaires. They are energy-efficient, robust, operate maintenance-free and hardly develop heat. In order for these advantages to be fully utilized and for customers to be able to rely on comparably high quality, we must comply with guidelines and standards. Important requirements regulate the compatibility of LED components. In addition there are standards and rules for the safety of lighting products as well as certifications for quality management in operation. Compatibility is imperative to BJB & Zhaga

Currently, we are dealing with an almost unmanageable range of LED components that by no means always match each other. This complicates the situation for both customers and producers. But since 2010, the industrial consortium Zhaga has been a coalition of international producers who have set themselves the goal of improving the interchangeability and compatibility of LED modules and components. In this body BJB is a regular member.

Standardized are LED light engines, LED modules, LED arrays, holders, ballasts and connectors based on mechanical, electrical, thermal and photomechanical parameters.For this purpose, the necessary interface specifications are defined in so-called "books". So far, 18 of these books have been published or in progress. They each deal with a topic, such as Spotlight modules or drivers.

It is obvious that customers benefit from the improved interchangeability of the modules. But the companies involved also have a lot to gain: People who work for Zhaga are at the cutting edge of product development, can respond more flexibly to customer requirements and improve their supply chain management.

For the general safety and quality requirements for lighting technology, there are also the known other international standards and certifications. Specifically in Germany and in the EU, which of course is also binding for BJB, the VDE and the ENEC award should be mentioned in this context.

Compliance with Standards & Innovation: BJB

Compliance with standards and innovation are not mutually exclusive: BJB has proven this time and time again. As a regular member of Zhaga, we are instrumental in shaping international compatibility standards. But beyond that, the long list of national and international certificates confirms the quality of our products and processes: In addition to the ISO 9001 certification and certification by the VDE, these include, among others, the badges CQC (China Quality Certification), cULus (Underwriter Laboratories) and JET (Japan Electircal Saftey & Technology Laboratories).
