BJB to Feature Advances in LED Board Exchangeability at Lightfair International 2019 in Philadelphia
May 6, 2019 0

There aren't many companies that have been around for 150 years. According to Business News Daily, there are only 21 American companies that were all started more than 150 years ago and are still thriving today. Companies such as JP Morgan Chase (1799), Jim Beam (1795), and DuPont (1802) are a few of the more recognizable brands.

And, when it comes to lighting technology, there's another company that's historic impact on an industry has thrived the test of time. That company is none other than BJB founded in 1867 in Germany. They will be headlining this years Lightfair International, in the historic city of Philadelphia. This event is the global epicenter of light, technology, knowledge, and innovation.

Joe Laufer, President of BJB's USA Operations is excited to feature advances in automation and board exchangeability, and they are highlighting a recent partnership with Signify (formerly Philips Lighting). Joe Laufer states:

Our solution, in partnership with Signify is to offer a system that allows for quick and easy board exchangeability.  With our system, the board ‘clicks’ into brackets in the fixture (provided by us) which eliminates the need for screws. Further, the electrical connection is made via our connector (see attached brochure below).  Field replacement would take seconds…

Joe Laufer, President - BJB USA

The industry, as a whole, does not seem to be interested in 'field repalaceability' but rather most interested in ease of installation during assembly. He continued:

We decided to display at Lightfair to showcase this product and hope to get a lot of feedback about this innovative solution.

April 30, 2019 0

You may wonder why BJB works so closely with Zhaga? When it comes to to the LED, Zhaga is the premiere organization aiming to standardize all components, including:

  • LED light engines
  • LED modules
  • LED arrays, along with holders, electronic control gear (LED drivers) and connectivity fit systems

As outlined at Zhaga.com, LED technology is evolving everyday, and it's imperative to have an industry-wide standard of oversight. Here's a few of the highlights of what this global-lighting organization is successfully accomplishing:

  • Use of Zhaga specifications can provide benefits such as the ability to keep pace with rapid LED technology evolution, flexibility to respond to customer/market requirements, and improved supply-chain management.
  • Zhaga is creating a set of Interface Specifications, known as Books, which define the conditions necessary for interchangeability. Each Book defines one or more components of an LED luminaire by means of the mechanical, photometric, electrical, thermal, and control interfaces of the component to its environment.
  • Products based on several of the Zhaga Books are already in common use in the global lighting market. Zhaga continues to develop new specifications that reflect the needs of luminaire makers and other stakeholders.
  • Zhaga members share their technical expertise in an open, cooperative manner. The consortium is market-oriented and works in the best interests of lighting-industry stakeholders.

An Evolving Organization

Zhaga is creating a series of specifications, known as Books. Each Book defines the interface of one or more components of an LED luminaire. Such components include LED light engines, LED modules, LED drivers, LED arrays, holders, and connectivity fit systems. You can CLICK HERE to review all of the Zhaga Books.

BJB is a Proud Member

There are 110 current members, including BJB, in this industry-wide collaboration - globally. Members include luminaire manufacturers, LED module makers, suppliers of materials and components, and testing labs. BJB is one of 20 'Regular Members', as the others are 'Associate Members and Community Members'.

Standards are Our Duty As Framework for Real Innovations in Lighting Technology

Currently, standards and standards are all about LEDs and their use in luminaires. They are energy-efficient, robust, operate maintenance-free and hardly develop heat. In order for these advantages to be fully utilized and for customers to be able to rely on comparably high quality, we must comply with guidelines and standards. Important requirements regulate the compatibility of LED components. In addition there are standards and rules for the safety of lighting products as well as certifications for quality management in operation. All these are tasks we work on permanently.Compatibility: If LED components were a bit more like Lego

Compatibility is imperative to BJB & Zhaga

Currently, we are dealing with an almost unmanageable range of LED components that by no means always match each other. This complicates the situation for both customers and producers. But since 2010, the industrial consortium Zhaga has been a coalition of international producers who have set themselves the goal of improving the interchangeability and compatibility of LED modules and components. In this body BJB is a regular member.

Standardized are LED light engines, LED modules, LED arrays, holders, ballasts and connectors based on mechanical, electrical, thermal and photomechanical parameters. For this purpose, the necessary interface specifications are defined in so-called "books". So far, 18 of these books have been published or in progress. They each deal with a topic, such as Spotlight modules or drivers.

It is obvious that customers benefit from the improved interchangeability of the modules. But the companies involved also have a lot to gain: People who work for Zhaga are at the cutting edge of product development, can respond more flexibly to customer requirements and improve their supply chain management.

For the general safety and quality requirements for lighting technology, there are also the known other international standards and certifications. Specifically in Germany and in the EU, which of course is also binding for BJB, the VDE and the ENEC award should be mentioned in this context.

Compliance with Standards & Innovation: BJB

Compliance with standards and innovation are not mutually exclusive: BJB has proven this time and time again. As a regular member of Zhaga, we are instrumental in shaping international compatibility standards. But beyond that, the long list of national and international certificates confirms the quality of our products and processes: In addition to the ISO 9001 certification and certification by the VDE, these include, among others, the badges CQC (China Quality Certification), cULus (Underwriter Laboratories) and JET (Japan Electircal Saftey & Technology Laboratories).

Adherence to standards, even if not required by law, always takes us a step further: processes are being sharpened, products are becoming more powerful, efficient and offering growing benefits. The pursuit of quality leads at best to innovations that move entire industries. Moreover, they are an important indicator for our customers around the world: they give you the certainty that you can trust these products. Both in terms of safety, as well as the handling and life. Technology for light from BJB - because you know what you have.

LED-BRIDGING: Innovative Connection Technology for Interchangeable LED Systems
April 25, 2019 0

BJB is Technology for light, and it all started well over a century ago! Here's why we are bridging the future. We began in 1867 in Arnsberg, Germany with the production of components for oil lamps.

It started with oil lamps

Logically, when the incandescent lamp established itself as the universal light source, we provided the electrical connection between the power source and the lamp. Today, we also develop and produce innovative, user-friendly lampholder and connector systems for LEDs, the light of the future. We call our products “Your connection to light”. But they are also your connection to the future – we will always retain our enthusiasm for new ideas.

Oil Lamps to LED - BJB is Technology for Light

LED - the light that adjusts to any atmosphere

Creative freedom indoors and outdoors LED is a quick-change artist. The light can look cool or warm and appear white or coloured. On the roads, it can show directions and warn of dangers. Bright enough for nothing to be missed. Discreet enough for no-one to be dazzled or distracted. As simple general lighting indoors, LED can ensure that space, objects and people are correctly and evenly illuminated. Or an individual lighting design can be used to create focal points. And outdoors, of course, LED can present places of interest in an even more interesting light, with small lamps producing impressive lighting effects in public places.

Standards for Individual Solutions

Because LED technology is developing at virtually the “speed of light” and more and more manufacturers are working with it, standards are necessary to enable the numerous advantages of modular design to be exploited. For this reason, an international group from the lighting industry has founded Zhaga (LED Light Engine Standardization).

The aim of Zhaga is to promote quality and speed of innovation in LED lighting technology and to create the right conditions for the interchangeability of components. With this objective in mind, the consortium is defining the interfaces for many application-specific modules. Zhaga standards define the physical dimensions as well as the photometric, electrical and thermal behaviour of the individual elements, no more, no less. This prevents fragmentation of the market as a result of incompatible products and creates a secure future for both producers and consumers.

The Zhaga group includes companies from the entire LED lighting industry, providers of LED modules and luminaires, as well as suppliers of components such as interfaces and lampholders, heat sinks and optics.

BJB Develops Connection Interface for Outdoor LED Modules
April 20, 2019 0

The model for the future design of human living areas is a “smart city” with intelligent technologies and applications. Smart Cities utilize sensors and controllers in outdoor lighting to conserve resources and enhance human comfort and safety.

The best LED lighting systems integrate intelligent modules via a ‘twistlock’ connection. With this evolution in mind, BJB, in accordance with Zhaga Book 18 standards, has developed the 47.121 series of module receptacles for easy installation and exchange of smart modules.

"Electromechanical interfaces has been BJB's speciality for over 100 years” says the developer responsible at BJB. “When the world was first electrified, our company was already focusing on the best ways of combining the light source and luminaire in a harmonious manner. And with LED technology and smart applications for light management, our product range has become even wider.”

The new 47.121 receptacle represents a universal solution for sensors and communication modules, which are connected by means of a ‘twistlock’ system. They can be changed, replaced or subsequently installed in an outdoor luminaire without difficulty. In the latter case, the receptacle is temporarily sealed with a tight-fitting cap.

Easy to install, safe to handle and made of high-quality materials

Like every product from BJB, the 47.121 receptacle is designed for safe, long-term use. In addition to the criteria set out in Zhaga Book 18, typical BJB advantages are also evident, such as easy installation and the use of high-quality materials. The receptacle can be attached to carriageway, street and surface area lights in an upwards, sideways or downwards direction by means of a standardized panel cut-out. For communication and data transmission, the connected module is provided with a DC line and DALI 2 or a 2-wire bus. The fourth connection is reserved as a digital IO port. The contacts have a maximum load of 2 A, 24 V. The module is hot pluggable and takes solid or stranded tinned conductors between 0.5 and 1.5 mm. It is certified according to DIN EN 61984 and UL 773 and has protection class rating IP66.
