Standards are Our Duty As Framework for Real Innovations in Lighting Technology
Currently, standards and standards are all about LEDs and their use in luminaires. They are energy-efficient, robust, operate maintenance-free and hardly develop heat. In order for these advantages to be fully utilized and for customers to be able to rely on comparably high quality, we must comply with guidelines and standards. Important requirements regulate the compatibility of LED components. In addition there are standards and rules for the safety of lighting products as well as certifications for quality management in operation. Currently, we are dealing with an almost unmanageable range of LED components that by no means always match each other. This complicates the situation for both customers and producers. But since 2010, the industrial consortium Zhaga has been a coalition of international producers who have set themselves the goal of improving the interchangeability and compatibility of LED modules and components. In this body BJB is a regular member.
Standardized are LED light engines, LED modules, LED arrays, holders, ballasts and connectors based on mechanical, electrical, thermal and photomechanical parameters.For this purpose, the necessary interface specifications are defined in so-called "books". So far, 18 of these books have been published or in progress. They each deal with a topic, such as Spotlight modules or drivers.
It is obvious that customers benefit from the improved interchangeability of the modules. But the companies involved also have a lot to gain: People who work for Zhaga are at the cutting edge of product development, can respond more flexibly to customer requirements and improve their supply chain management.
For the general safety and quality requirements for lighting technology, there are also the known other international standards and certifications. Specifically in Germany and in the EU, which of course is also binding for BJB, the VDE and the ENEC award should be mentioned in this context.

Standards for Individual Solutions
Because LED technology is developing at virtually the “speed of light” and more and more manufacturers are working with it, standards are necessary to enable the numerous advantages of modular design to be exploited. For this reason, an international group from the lighting industry has founded Zhaga (LED Light Engine Standardization).
The aim of Zhaga is to promote quality and speed of innovation in LED lighting technology and to create the right conditions for the interchangeability of components. With this objective in mind, the consortium is defining the interfaces for many application-specific modules. Zhaga standards define the physical dimensions as well as the photometric, electrical and thermal behaviour of the individual elements, no more, no less. This prevents fragmentation of the market as a result of incompatible products and creates a secure future for both producers and consumers.
The Zhaga group includes companies from the entire LED lighting industry, providers of LED modules and luminaires, as well as suppliers of components such as interfaces and lampholders, heat sinks and optics.

The best LED lighting systems integrate intelligent modules via a ‘twistlock’ connection. With this evolution in mind, BJB, in accordance with Zhaga Book 18 standards, has developed the 47.121 series of module receptacles for easy installation and exchange of smart modules.

The new 47.121 receptacle represents a universal solution for sensors and communication modules, which are connected by means of a ‘twistlock’ system. They can be changed, replaced or subsequently installed in an outdoor luminaire without difficulty. In the latter case, the receptacle is temporarily sealed with a tight-fitting cap.
Easy to install, safe to handle and made of high-quality materials
Like every product from BJB, the 47.121 receptacle is designed for safe, long-term use. In addition to the criteria set out in Zhaga Book 18, typical BJB advantages are also evident, such as easy installation and the use of high-quality materials. The receptacle can be attached to carriageway, street and surface area lights in an upwards, sideways or downwards direction by means of a standardized panel cut-out. For communication and data transmission, the connected module is provided with a DC line and DALI 2 or a 2-wire bus. The fourth connection is reserved as a digital IO port. The contacts have a maximum load of 2 A, 24 V. The module is hot pluggable and takes solid or stranded tinned conductors between 0.5 and 1.5 mm. It is certified according to DIN EN 61984 and UL 773 and has protection class rating IP66.
